چکیده

BitTorrent is currently one of the most popular peer-to-peer file sharing applications. Many previous studies of BitTorrent performance have focused on the dynamics of BitTorrent swarms and model flashcrowds by means of the arrival and departure processes of peers. However, until now there is no study that investigates the flashcrowd phenomenon at the BitTorrent system level. In this paper, we explore this phenomenon in global BitTorrent systems by analyzing three datasets collected from two BitTorrent trackers that serve millions of swarms. We first develop a flashcrowd identification algorithm that captures and quantitatively characterizes flashcrowds. Then, we conduct a comprehensive statistical analysis of the properties of flashcrowds, which include their magnitude, arrival time, duration, and plateau period. We also examine the overall arrival pattern of flashcrowds in BitTorrent systems, and the effects of flashcrowds on the growth and decay of BitTorrent systems. We formulate eleven findings that depict the big picture of the flashcrowds phenomenon in BitTorrent systems; for example, only a small fraction of swarms exhibit significant flashcrowds, but these swarms serve a large fraction of peers, from over a quarter to over two thirds of the peers during the peak period. We provide valuable insights for designing effective flashcrowd handling algorithms. We show that in BitTorrent flahscrowds can lead to extreme service deprivation, where the second seeder (the first fully served peer) only appears after the peak of the flashcrowd.

The Bittorrent P2P File-Sharing System: Measurements and Analysis

Of the many P2P file-sharing prototypes in existence, BitTorrent is one of the few that has managed to attract millions of users. BitTorrent relies on other (global) components for file search, employs a moderator system to ensure the integrity of file data, and uses a bartering technique for downloading in order to prevent users from freeriding. In this paper we present a measurement study of ...

Analytical Modeling of Peer-to-peer File Sharing Systems

In this paper, we present a survey of recent work in analytical modeling of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing systems. We focus on the modeling of three aspects of such systems. First, we describe several performance models regarding chunk-based protocols such as BitTorrent [1]. Secondly, we summarize a trace analysis and corresponding model of the workload and user behavior in a general file sha...

Optimization Questions in BitTorrent Communities

A BitTorrent community is a peer-to-peer (P2P) computer network. All users have restricted upload and download bandwidths, and they have different seed libraries, while various objectives could emerge in the network. The behavior of the peers is determined by the BitTorrent protocol which was designed originally for file exchange. However, other applications are also possible as BitTorrent Assi...

DSML-Aided Development for Mobile P2P Systems

The proliferation of Mobile P2P systems made a next generation mobile BitTorrent client an appropriate target to compare two different development approaches: the traditional manual coding and domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) accompanied by generators. We present two DSMLs for mobile communication modeling, and one for user interface development. We compare the approaches by developme...
